Vietnam’s New Wellness Escape: Inside Namia River Retreat

There are hotels with spas, and then there are hotels where wellness shapes almost every element of your stay. Tucked away on a peaceful stretch of river just outside Hoi An, Namia River Retreat belongs firmly in the latter. Here, wellness isn't confined to an hour-long massage before returning to normal resort life. Instead, it quietly weaves its way through your entire day, from morning movement and traditional Vietnamese therapies to slow river journeys, nourishing food and small rituals designed to make you pause.
We spent three nights here towards during our time in Vietnam, and it proved to be exactly the reset we didn't realise we needed. What makes Namia particularly special, however, is that you never feel disconnected from Hoi An itself. The ancient town remains within easy reach, while experiences throughout the resort introduce you to the traditions, landscapes and slower rhythms of life that have shaped this part of Vietnam for generations.
The result? A retreat that manages to feel wonderfully secluded without ever feeling isolated.

First Impressions & Setting
Arriving at Namia River Retreat feels like entering a completely different side of Hoi An. Away from the lantern-filled streets and energy of the Ancient Town, the resort sits surrounded by water and tropical greenery, with the Thu Bon River and surrounding landscape becoming an integral part of the experience.
There's an immediate sense of calm. The design feels distinctly Vietnamese without leaning into cliché. Natural textures, warm woods and earthy tones blend beautifully with the landscape, while water seems to appear almost everywhere you look.
Rather than creating a resort that could exist anywhere in the world, Namia feels deeply rooted in its surroundings. That's something that becomes increasingly apparent the longer you stay.
The Villas
Our home for the stay was a one-bedroom Nipa Pool Villa, and it immediately felt like somewhere designed for spending far more time than you originally intended.
The interiors are calming and contemporary, combining natural materials, warm neutral tones and subtle Vietnamese influences, but the real luxury comes from the sense of privacy. Large windows blur the boundary between indoors and out, while your own private pool creates a secluded little sanctuary away from the rest of the resort.
The bathroom was another highlight, particularly the beautiful sunken bathtub, which feels perfectly in keeping with Namia's emphasis on slowing down. Deep, inviting and designed for long evening soaks, it quickly became one of my favourite details in the villa.
Having your own pool completely changes the rhythm of a stay too. Mornings could begin slowly with coffee outside, afternoons were made for slipping into the water between treatments, and evenings felt wonderfully peaceful once we returned to the villa. Everything feels private, considered and incredibly restorative (exactly what you want from a wellness retreat).
Rooms
Our room provided exactly what we were looking for after long days spent exploring Tokyo.
Spacious by Tokyo standards, it combined contemporary luxury with subtle Japanese influences. City-view windows flooded the room with natural light during the day, while at night the city skyline created a spectacular backdrop.
The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and every detail felt thoughtfully considered, from the generous bathroom to the high-quality amenities. It was the kind of room that made returning to the hotel each evening something to look forward to.
Wellness at Namia
Wellness is undoubtedly at the heart of Namia River Retreat. Rather than treating the spa as an occasional indulgence, Namia has designed its experience around incorporating wellbeing into every day. During our stay, our package included a daily 90-minute Wellness Journey, something that completely changed the pace of the trip.
Our first combined 30 minutes of hydrotherapy with a 60-minute Vietnamese full-body massage. On the following days, hydrotherapy was paired with prescribed wellness treatments, allowing the experience to feel increasingly tailored rather than repetitive.
There's something wonderfully indulgent about knowing a treatment is waiting for you each day, but it also encourages you to stop treating wellness as something you squeeze into a holiday schedule. Here, it is the schedule.
And that philosophy continues even once you've returned to your villa. Each evening, the turndown service included a thoughtful in-room wellbeing ritual, with relaxing bath products and herbal teas waiting for us. After a day of treatments and exploring Hoi An, coming back to everything prepared for an evening soak in the sunken bathtub became a lovely little ritual in itself. It's these quieter details that make Namia's approach to wellness feel so considered. Rather than ending when you walk out of the spa, the sense of relaxation follows you back to your room and continues right through to bedtime.
Beyond treatments, guests can choose from a rotating programme of practices designed around movement, mindfulness and traditional approaches to wellbeing. Yang Yoga combines stronger movement with breathwork to energise the body, while Partner Yoga takes a gentler approach centred around connection and conscious movement. In the evenings, Sleep Yoga offers a restorative practice intended to quieten the mind before bed.
Early risers can also experience Dưỡng Sinh, a traditional Vietnamese practice similar to Tai Chi that combines gentle movement and breathwork. Traditionally practised at dawn, it's the kind of experience that feels perfectly suited to Namia's quiet riverside setting. Even something as simple as walking becomes intentional here, with silent mindful walks inspired by Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh encouraging guests to slow down and reconnect with their surroundings. None of it feels forced. You can fill your schedule with activities or simply choose the rituals that appeal to you and spend the rest of the day by your pool.
And perhaps that's what Namia understands best: wellness looks different to everyone.

Dining
Food naturally plays an important role in the experience too. Breakfast is served at The Merchant, where mornings begin overlooking the resort's peaceful surroundings. Rather than rushing through breakfast before sightseeing, Namia encourages the opposite: slow mornings, good coffee and nowhere you urgently need to be.
The resort's dining options include The Merchant and The Fisherman, allowing you to move between different settings throughout your stay. But our most memorable meal took place away from the restaurants altogether.
On our final evening, we boarded The Merchant River Cruise for a five-course dinner inspired by the ancient Spice Route that once passed through and shaped Hoi An.
Dining while slowly travelling along the river brings an entirely different atmosphere to the evening. The lights along the shoreline gradually appear as daylight fades, while each course references the ingredients and culinary influences that travelled through this historic trading port. It was easily one of the most atmospheric evenings of our stay.
Activities & Experiences
Namia offers plenty beyond the spa, with experiences designed to connect guests with local life. One of the most playful is taking a traditional basket boat through the resort's Nipa forest lane, where you can try paddling the distinctive round boats once used by local fishermen or simply let the team guide you through the palms.
There are also daily cultural activities and Hoi An Host experiences, but nothing feels compulsory. You can start with sunrise Tai Chi, cycle into Hoi An, enjoy an afternoon treatment and end the day on the river, or simply slow down and spend the day by your private pool. That freedom to do as much or as little as you like is a big part of Namia's appeal.
Final Thoughts
Namia River Retreat is more than somewhere to sleep between days exploring Hoi An; it becomes part of the experience itself. Wellness, culture and destination are thoughtfully intertwined, from daily treatments and mindfulness practices to river cruises, private pools and sunset cocktails, yet nothing ever feels overly structured.
It also strikes a rare balance when it comes to location. Hoi An Ancient Town is close enough to dip in and out of easily, while back at the resort, the peaceful riverside setting feels completely removed from the bustle. For anyone wanting to explore Hoi An without sacrificing the feeling of a relaxing escape, Namia River Retreat is a perfect choice.
