The Maldives resort that redefined luxury for me

Updated: May 28

Typically, when we think of luxury hotels, we picture ultra-polished furniture, staff who are barely seen yet somehow always present, guests who prefer privacy over mingling, and poolside loungers filled with (dare I say) slightly judgemental stares wondering who’s who. The food often looks like it belongs in a museum rather than on a plate. And while I’ll always appreciate that kind of ‘old-money’ elegance, I do think the definition of luxury in the hospitality world has evolved massively.

It’s no longer about being secluded or overly formal, now it’s about sustainability, working with local communities, and offering a warmer, more human experience that makes guests feel genuinely welcomed. I visited Kuredhivaru Resort & Spa back in April, and what really struck me wasn’t just how luxurious it was, but how heartfelt and sincere the entire experience felt.

Location

Kuredhivaru is nestled in the Noonu Atoll, one of the Maldives’ lesser-known and more untouched regions, which is exactly what makes it so special. After landing in Malé, it’s a scenic 45-minute seaplane journey across endless turquoise waters. And yes, the views are just as dreamy as you'd imagine. The island itself feels wonderfully remote, but still perfectly connected for those looking to explore nearby reefs or hop on a dolphin cruise. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and barefoot luxury truly comes into its own. First Impressions

Let’s just say Kuredhivaru knows how to make an entrance. Before we’d even touched down, the aerial view from the seaplane gave us a glimpse of the island’s sprawling lagoon — that kind of endless, glittering turquoise that doesn’t quite feel real. The moment we arrived, we were greeted with the rhythmic beat of Maldivian drums and handed a chilled, branded coconut water (a small but thoughtful touch that instantly put us in holiday mode). The arrival jetty itself is grand and open, giving you a panoramic view of the ocean as warm smiles welcome you into the resort. Even before setting foot in the villa, you can already sense the blend of luxury and sincerity that Kuredhivaru quietly prides itself on.

After soaking in the welcome, we were whisked away by Li, our lovely host, who drove us by buggy to our overwater villa which was perfectly placed near the end of the pier for those uninterrupted lagoon views. It felt like a little slice of private paradise, far enough for total peace yet just a short ride to everything else. One of the best touches? Check-in had already been handled via the app while we waited at the seaplane terminal, so everything on arrival was smooth, quick and fuss-free. Waiting in the villa was a chilled bottle of champagne and an afternoon tea selection... because nothing says "holiday mode activated" quite like bubbles and pastries overlooking the ocean.

Rooms

During our visit, we stayed in one of their Overwater Pool Villas, which came with all the usual luxuries such as robes, slippers, bathroom toiletries and a well-stocked minibar. The villa itself stretched over 140m², with high ceilings, generously sized rooms, a walk-in wardrobe, and a private infinity pool overlooking the lagoon. Perhaps my favourite feature? The glass-bottom floors, where you could even spot the occasional fish gliding beneath you as you wandered down the entrance corridor.

Food & Dining

Dining at Kuredhivaru really is part of the experience. The resort has a handful of options depending on the kind of vibe (or appetite) you’re after. The main restaurant, ONU Marché, is where you'll find a generous buffet-style breakfast each morning, and themed dinners in the evenings – think Maldivian specialities one night, Mediterranean the next. The setting is beautiful too, with its bamboo architecture and open-air layout that feels relaxed yet refined.

Latitude 5.5 sits by the pool and is a great shout for lunch or a more laid-back dinner. Grilled meats, fresh seafood, cocktails at sunset – it’s all got that casual beach club feel without trying too hard. For something a little more elevated, Bodumas is their overwater restaurant serving Japanese fusion dishes. It’s the perfect dinner spot if you’re celebrating or just fancy something a bit fancy with a view.

A fun little daily ritual at the resort is the Chocolate Hour (yes, it’s as good as it sounds). Every afternoon at 3pm, the lounge puts out a spread of chocolatey treats – from cakes to truffles and even Mövenpick’s signature ice cream. It’s included in your stay and honestly, I looked forward to it every single day.

Whether you're in the mood for buffet breakfasts, poolside bites or a romantic dinner over the water, there’s something for every kind of food mood here.

Experiences

Whether you're all about relaxation or the type that can’t sit still on holiday, Kuredhivaru has something for every kind of traveller. The spa is tucked away in its own little sanctuary above the water and feels like a world of its own. Their Signature Voyager massage was the standout for me – a deeply soothing full-body treatment that blends techniques from around the world, designed to help you properly switch off (which, let’s be honest, we all need).

If you’re more into high-energy mornings than slow spa days, the resort’s water sports centre is fully stocked with toys to keep you entertained. We packed our days with wakeboarding, water-skiing, jet-skiing, and even had a go on the Seabob, which basically feels like being a dolphin for the day. For something a little more serene, the house reef is just a few steps from shore. There’s no need to hop on a boat to see marine life, we spotted vibrant fish, reef sharks and rays just metres from the beach. Snorkelling gear is complimentary, and you can head out at your own pace, which makes it all feel super relaxed and easy.

One morning we treated ourselves to a floating breakfast in the villa pool – yes, it’s exactly as extra and amazing as it sounds.

Final thoughts

Kuredhivaru really is that perfect sweet spot of barefoot luxury with just the right amount of buzz. It’s intimate enough to feel like your own private island, yet big enough to keep things interesting. Whether that’s hopping between restaurants, heading out for water sports, or simply strolling through the palm-lined paths with nowhere to be. It strikes a rare balance: five-star comfort without the stuffiness, and genuine warmth in every interaction. If you’re after a slice of Maldivian luxury that feels both elevated and personal, this might just be your place.
